After going on hormonal birth control, explains Jerilynn Prior, MD, professor of endocrinology and metabolism at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, “some women gain weight, some lose, but most stay the same.” And that includes weight gain. That doesn’t mean that you, personally, will not gain weight on the Pill, however; it only means that there is no statistical evidence connecting the Pill to increased weight. If you should happen to gain weight while on birth control, or if you are already a little heavy, here’s one thing to keep in mind: Recent research suggests that both the Patch and the Pill may offer less-than-optimum pregnancy protection for women weighing more than 155 pounds. Several more recent and smaller studies have found, however, that the Shot causes no weight gain. Studies have shown that women taking Lunelle can expect to gain an average of 4 pounds during the first year, although some may gain considerably more – up to 20 or more pounds. The bottom line: Birth control will not screw with your fertility long term, says Minkin. Myth #5: Newer forms of birth control aren't as safe as the older brands. Reality: You may have heard that newer forms of birth control—like Yasmin, Yaz, or Nuva Ring—come with more hormones and more health risks than the old standbys. The truth is, the newer the birth control, the fewer hormones it contains, says Minkin. And while some studies have shown a slightly higher risk of blood clots in women taking newer forms of birth control, the increase is extremely low and still much lower than your risk of developing a clot while pregnant, says Minkin. The reason for this misconception is that some forms of the IUD (like Mirena and Para Guard) are generally recommended for women with children, since your cervix and uterus are slightly larger after giving birth, which should make implantation and use more comfortable, says Minkin. Myth #7: It's unhealthy to use birth control to skip your period. "If you are a good candidate to be on birth control in the first place—you're healthy, you don't have high blood pressure that's uncontrolled, you're not over 35 or a smoker—then you are indeed a candidate for fiddling around with your cycle," says Minkin. So if you're looking for a hormone-free birth control method, don't be swayed by the myth that condoms can kill the moment. Reality: While the Affordable Care Act is changing the way you're charged for birth control, that doesn't necessarily mean that all contraception is totally gratis all the time. Other than that, you can stay on your chosen method of birth control for as long as you want, says Minkin.

Weight Loss and Birth Control Pills

The connection between birth control pills and weight loss sparks a contentious debate in the medical community. On one side are doctors backed by years of research that says that combination pills don't affect your weight, and on the other side are legions of birth control pill users who attribute their unwanted pounds to the pills after reading that weight gain is a possible side effect. The truth is that they're both right, and that a simple pill switch may help you shed the extra weight. Carson Liu says that combination pills may lead to weight gain due to the actions of the individual hormones. Tristi Muir disagrees, however, citing research that showed no link between weight gain and oral contraceptive pills. She says, "The fact is that as women age, they gain weight. On average, people in both groups gained approximately one pound per year." So the bottom line is that your weight gain may not be the fault of your pill, but switching may help you and isn't likely to hurt you.

Yasmin and Weight Loss

It will not likely help a woman lose weight, but it might cause her problems with the loss of potassium. Birth Control and Acne : How the Pill Helps Your Skin

Does the pill help with acne? Here in the beauty department, we've already told you about one particular pill that could help with your acne. You know it as Accutane , and while it certainly works for most who try it, it's a pretty major and serious commitment. But there's another pill you can take that's a lot less medically controversial, even if it is the stuff of the Supreme Court's stuffier justices' nightmares . Going on "the pill," as it's called, can totally change your skin by regulating your hormones, which is crucial for young women who are still developing, or whose bodies are still adjusting from their very first period. "The pill contains the same hormones that your body makes, called estrogen and progestin, just in different amounts, so it can override your body's signals to release an egg (or ovulate). Consequently, it also lowers your body's testosterone level, which in turn can reduce acne," says Dr. And as celebrity esthetician Renée Rouleau explains, "oils breed bacteria, and bacteria leads to breakouts." So the theory is, if testosterone goes down, so does acne. "The tricky part is that sometimes there's a flare before the suppression occurs, which can temporarily make acne worse before it gets better. "Girls can react differently to the same pill," Dr. That means boys don't have such easy access to clearing up their complexions (win!) but it also means you can totally talk to your friends about what they're using or what doctor they're seeing to get insights and advice. I lost weight on YAZ birth control! – Calorie Count

Well I started YAZ two weeks ago and I have lost SEVEN POUNDS. So, ladies, if you're looking for a birth control pill that will not put weight on you, I would consider YAZ. I've heard alot of good things about YAZ, so if I do go back on a pill, that's the one I want. I think part of the reason I've lost may have to do with the wellbutrin, but the YAZ certainly has not hindered my weight loss efforts. I maintained my weight pretty well on Yaz, as soon as I decided to stop birth control for good because I hated the hormones I instantly within 2 weeks gained 10 lbs. Great for PMS (phsyical and emotional symptoms), and for cramps, and good for the skin as well. And I haven't gained weight from it (I have gained weight but I know why and it's not that - I've had periods of being very skinny while on it). I am thinking of switching to Yaz and seing the positive things that you all have provided helped a lot with my decision. I have had irresitable cravings that is very unbelievable to me because I run every day for about 15 minutes and I would lose about 3 pounds then gain it back again the moment I wake up. I am hoping that Yaz will be the right one for me.

Taking Oral Contraceptives for PCOS

There are two types of birth control pills which are based on the types of hormones present: progestin only pills and pills that are a combination of progestin and estrogen. Hormones and the Menstrual Cycle. During the menstrual cycle, estrogen is secreted by the developing egg follicle and aids in thickening of the endometrium , in preparation for a pregnancy. During a normal menstrual cycle, the endometrium, or lining of the uterus, is exposed to hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, which cause the lining to proliferate and thicken. It is that drop in progesterone levels that triggers the lining of the uterus to be shed each cycle, known as a woman's period. In PCOS, ovulation does not occur regularly, which prevents the rise and fall of progesterone which brings on a woman's period. Instead, the lining is not shed and is exposed to estrogen for a longer period of time causing the uterine lining to grow much thicker then normal. Taking the birth control regulates your menstrual cycle by providing the progesterone that your body needs, causing the uterine lining to be shed frequently and reducing the risk of endometrial hyperplasia. However two types of progestin are used alone in progestin only pills: norethindrone and norgestrel, which is no longer available in the United States. Low dose oral contraceptives contain 20mcg of estrogen plus the progestin. Regular dose contain 30mcg to 35mcg of estrogen plus progestin and high dose contain 50mcg of estrogen plus the progestin.
